Motorcraft CX-2409 Vapor Canister Purge Valve — Complete Fix for Ford P0443 & P0496 EVAP Codes
If your Ford F-150, Explorer, Mustang, or Edge is showing a P0443 or P0496 check engine light, the vapor canister purge valve is almost always the cause. The Motorcraft CX-2409 is the genuine OEM purge valve for a wide range of 2010–2021 Ford and Lincoln vehicles — and in this guide we'll explain exactly what it does, how to diagnose a failed one, and how to replace it yourself in under 10 minutes.
What is the vapor canister purge valve?
Your Ford's EVAP (evaporative emission control) system prevents raw fuel vapors from escaping into the atmosphere. Instead, fuel vapors from the gas tank are stored in a charcoal canister and then routed back into the engine to be burned during normal operation. The purge valve — also called the canister purge solenoid — controls when and how much vapor is released from the canister into the intake manifold.
When the purge valve fails stuck open or stuck closed, the EVAP system can't function correctly. This triggers a check engine light and can cause a range of drivability issues.
Symptoms of a failing CX-2409 purge valve
Check engine light with codes P0443 (EVAP purge control valve circuit) or P0496 (EVAP flow during non-purge)
Rough idle — especially after filling the fuel tank
Hard starting right after fueling
poor fuel economy
Strong fuel smell from the engine bay
Failed emissions test
P0443 and P0496 are among the most common check engine codes on Ford vehicles equipped with the CX-2409 purge valve. In most cases, replacing the purge valve with the correct Motorcraft unit clears the code immediately and resolves all symptoms.

How to replace the CX-2409 purge valve — under 10 minutes
Let the engine cool before starting
Locate the purge valve on the intake manifold — usually near the throttle body
Disconnect the vacuum hose from the purge valve
Unplug the electrical connector — press the tab and pull
Remove the mounting bolt or clip holding the valve in place
Install the new CX-2409 in reverse order
Reconnect the vacuum hose and electrical connector
Clear the EVAP code with an OBD-II scanner and test drive
The code may take up to 50–100 miles of driving to clear on its own if you don't have a scanner. With a scanner, it clears instantly after replacement.
