Understanding the Ford EcoBoost Ignition System
Ford's 2.0L and 2.3L EcoBoost engines are turbocharged 4-cylinder engines. The turbocharger pumps more air into each cylinder, producing more power from a smaller displacement. However, this also means the ignition system has to work harder than in a naturally aspirated engine; Higher cylinder pressures require a stronger and more consistent spark from both the coil and the spark plug.

Motorcraft SP-550 spark plug — what it does and when it fails
The SP-550 (OEM: CYFS-12Y-PCT) is an updated iridium spark plug for Ford's EcoBoost 4-cylinder engines, replacing the discontinued SP-537. The iridium center electrode is designed to withstand the extreme conditions inside a turbocharged cylinder. When SP-550 spark plugs wear out:
Increased spark plug gap causes weak or inconsistent sparking
Ignition problems under turbo — the turbo makes spark plug wear signs much more pronounced
Reduced fuel efficiency
Difficulty starting in cold weather
Irregular idling and misfires
⚠️ Important: SP-550 is not compatible with the 2023 Ford Escape ST Line EcoBoost model. The correct spark plug for this model is SP-597. Always verify compatibility with your VIN number before ordering.

How to replace DG-562 coils and SP-550 spark plugs together?
Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery before starting.
Remove the engine cover, if any.
Use compressed air to clean debris from each coil housing.
Remove the coil electrical connector, remove the retaining bolt, and pull the coil straight up. Use a 9/16" spark plug socket to remove the old SP-550 spark plug.
Install the new SP-550 spark plug by hand first, then tighten with 11 ft-lbs of torque.
Press the new DG-562 spark plug firmly until it clicks into place.
Reinstall the bolt and reconnect the electrical connector.
Repeat for all 4 cylinders.
Reconnect the battery, clear all fault codes, and take a test drive.
