Volkswagen 1.9 TDI ALH and BEW Oil Change Guide
Regular oil service is essential for protecting the turbocharger, camshaft, bearings, and other internal components of a Volkswagen 1.9 TDI engine. This guide covers compatible Beetle, Golf, Jetta, and Jetta Wagon models equipped with ALH or BEW engines.

ALH and BEW Engine Differences
The ALH and BEW are both 1.9-liter Volkswagen turbo-diesel engines, but they use different fuel-injection systems.
The ALH uses a rotary injection pump, while the BEW uses Volkswagen’s Pumpe-Düse unit-injector system. The BEW requires an oil meeting VW 505 01 because of the increased load placed on its camshaft and valvetrain.
Top Tec 4100 5W-40 meets VW 505 01, making it suitable for the compatible BEW applications covered by this kit while also supporting the listed ALH applications.
Parts and Tools Required
- Five liters of Liqui Moly Top Tec 4100 SAE 5W-40
- Hengst E154H D48 cartridge oil filter
- Replacement filter seals
- New oil drain plug
- Drain plug sealing washer
- Oil drain pan
- Oil filter housing socket
- Ratchet and socket set
- Torque wrench
- Funnel
- Protective gloves and cleaning towels
Oil Change Procedure
- Park the vehicle on a level surface.
- Allow the engine to warm slightly, then switch it off.
- Engage the parking brake and safely raise the vehicle if necessary.
- Remove the lower engine cover.
- Place a drain pan beneath the engine oil pan.
- Remove the drain plug and allow the oil to drain completely.
- Remove the oil filter housing cap and old cartridge filter.
- Remove the used filter seals.
- Lightly lubricate the new seals with fresh engine oil.
- Install the new Hengst filter and seals.
- Tighten the filter housing cap to the manufacturer’s specification.
- Install the replacement drain plug and sealing washer.
- Add approximately four liters of fresh engine oil.
- Start the engine briefly and inspect for leaks.
- Switch off the engine and wait several minutes.
- Check the oil level and add oil gradually as required.
- Reinstall the lower engine cover.
- Reset the maintenance reminder where applicable.
Should All Five Liters Be Added?
No. Five liters are supplied so enough oil is available to complete the service and adjust the final level.
Start with approximately four liters. Run the engine briefly, allow the oil to settle, and check the dipstick. Continue adding small amounts until the correct level is reached.
How to Find the Engine Code
Because some 2004 models may have either an ALH or BEW engine, confirm the code before ordering. It may be found on:
- The vehicle identification label
- The timing belt cover or engine label
- The maintenance booklet
- A diagnostic scan
- Vehicle records matched to the VIN
BRM Engine Warning
This kit does not fit the later 2005.5 and newer Jetta TDI equipped with the BRM engine. The BRM application uses a different oil filter.
