Volkswagen 1.8T and 2.0L 5W-40 Oil Change Guide

Regular engine oil changes help protect the bearings, camshaft, cylinder surfaces, and turbocharger found in applicable Volkswagen engines. This guide covers compatible Beetle, Golf, GTI, Jetta, GLI, and Jetta Wagon models using the 06A115561B-style spin-on oil filter.

Required Oil Specification

The compatible gasoline engines covered by this guide generally require oil meeting VW 502 00. The supplied oil also meets VW 505 00 and ACEA A3/B4 specifications.

Viscosity alone does not confirm compatibility. Always verify the required Volkswagen approval before selecting engine oil.

Oil Change Procedure

  1. Park the vehicle on a level surface.
  2. Allow the engine to warm slightly, then switch it off.
  3. Engage the parking brake and safely raise the vehicle if required.
  4. Remove the lower engine cover where equipped.
  5. Position a drain pan beneath the oil pan.
  6. Remove the drain plug and allow the used oil to drain completely.
  7. Remove the old spin-on oil filter.
  8. Verify that the old filter gasket was removed with the filter.
  9. Lightly lubricate the new filter gasket with fresh engine oil.
  10. Install the new filter according to its instructions.
  11. Install the replacement drain plug and sealing washer.
  12. Add the initial quantity of fresh oil.
  13. Start the engine briefly and verify that the oil-pressure warning turns off.
  14. Inspect the filter and drain plug for leaks.
  15. Switch off the engine and wait several minutes.
  16. Check the dipstick and add oil gradually as required.
  17. Reinstall the lower engine cover.
  18. Reset the maintenance reminder where applicable.

Avoid a Double-Gasket Oil Leak

When removing the old filter, confirm that its rubber sealing gasket has not remained attached to the engine. Installing the new filter over an old gasket can cause rapid oil loss after starting the engine.

Lightly lubricate the new gasket and tighten the filter according to the filter manufacturer’s instructions.
